The Challenge is a national charity that was founded in 2009. Our mission is to design and deliver programmes that bring different people together to develop their confidence and skills in understanding and connecting with others. 

About the role

The Head of Brand and Marketing is a new role. It represents a unique opportunity to build a high-performing and cohesive team to transform our brand and marketing activities across the whole organisation. The organisation’s mission and vision have never been more relevant to society, and so by raising the profile of our organisation and demand for programmes, this role will help drive participation of ~70,000 young people in our programmes, and engage and motivate our ~1,000 core members of staff.

The priorities for the role are:

  • [1] Developing and launching a new organisational brand, and raising significantly the profile of the organisation
  • [2] Providing an excellent marketing service to the three programmes (NCS, HeadStart and Step Forward) to support delivery of the programme sales targets
  • [3] Ensuring the brand and marketing activities for the organisation and programmes form a coherent whole and that all are mutually supportive

The role will have a dual reporting line. The primary reporting line will be into the Strategy, Operational Effectiveness, Brand and External Affairs Director, to ensure functional excellence and coherency across all branding and marketing activities. However, the role will also report into the three Heads of Department responsible for NCS, HeadStart and Step Forward, to ensure the marketing service provided drives the needs of the programmes.

Responsibilities

  • [1] Organisational brand
  • Build on the work done to date to develop and launch a new organisational brand; manage internal and external stakeholder engagement to gain the support needed for the rebrand
  • As part of this work, co-develop and launch new organisational values with HR
  • Manage and maximise the value of the organisational brand on an ongoing basis
    • Ensure the successful long term development of the brand, in line with the needs of our target audience and the organisation’s strategic objectives, mission and vision
    • Ensure brand guardianship; evolve brand guidelines as necessary, provide brand direction to strategic campaigns; develop messages for internal and external audiences
  • Raise significantly the external awareness and profile of the organisation
    • Using all appropriate channels, raise the profile of the organisation to support the organisation’s strategic objectives, mission and vision
  • [2] Marketing service
  • Lead the three marketing teams for each of the three programmes
    • Ensure the development and execution of marketing strategies and tactical plans for each of the three programmes to support delivery of objectives and growth plans
    • Develop a clear messaging architecture to ensure impact and coherency of marketing messages across all key audiences for all programmes
    • Be a champion for the three programmes and the impact they have on the lives of young people
    • Lead strategic relationships with key external stakeholders including with the NCS Trust
    • Build strong, trusting and collaborative relationships with the Heads of Department and other key stakeholders in the programme teams to support all of the above
  • Monitor engagement with and the impact of the organisational brand and the NCS, HeadStart and Step Forward brands

Skills and experience

  • Leading significant marketing and branding projects within the commercial or non-profit sector;
  • Working with agencies to develop and launch brands, and to deliver significant marketing projects;
  • Development and execution of high impact digital strategies;
  • Extensive use of market and brand research to evidence and plan;
  • Project management and change management at the pan organisational level;
  • Proven track record of successfully influenceing a wide range of internal and external stakeholders through building highly effective relationships and showing diplomacy and challenge in equal measure;
  • Brand champion personality;
  • Strong manager and leader of people; the experience of managing dispersed teams;
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively at the most senior levels of an organisation;
  • Managing large budgets, including forecasting, monitoring spend, and ensuring value-for-money through cost-benefit analysis, etc.
  • Creative and logical thinking as well as problem solving skills;
  • Ability to think quickly, and work with pace and dynamism.
