An interview with Cindy Khalfa

Cindy Khalfa works as a learning behaviour specialist for The Challenge. She tells us what it’s like working on the NCS programme, balancing this commitment with working in a school as its inclusion leader. She most enjoys seeing the difference NCS makes in the lives of young people.

A typical working is…

“My day is based on needs, so I’m deployed within the zone I cover and travel across south east London. My focus could be on a young person needing extra support – one example in the last few days was someone who arrived in the UK five months ago and has limited English. That was a case of advising and overseeing how a task could be differentiated, especially to make sure they were able to take part in the public speaking, as we want everyone to feel included and supported to get the best NCS experience. I also work a lot on resolving conflict, coming up with strategies depending on the circumstances. Perseverance and going in as quickly as possible to diffuse situations is vital.”

My favourite thing about my job is…

“Seeing the impact that we have. While my role can be challenging, it’s also hugely rewarding. Sometimes I can go in and have a simple conversation with a young person and see the difference. I think NCS is such a great programme for young people to be on as they change and grow, and benefit for it so much.”

The thing I find most challenging about my job is…

“Making an impact and a difference quickly – once I understand the situation, I need to come up with a solution pretty fast.”

When I’m not working…

“I’m usually catching up with friends, reading, in the garden, or going out in London making the most of West End musicals.”

My favourite quote is…

“It’s from Albert Einstein: “Everybody is a Genius. But If You Judge a Fish by Its Ability to Climb a Tree, It Will Live Its Whole Life Believing that It is Stupid”.
