Dave Gore

Programme manager

An interview with Dave Gore

Dave started working with The Challenge back in 2011 and is now a senior programme manager in Manchester. He has a background in youth work, including working as an NCS mentor.

A typical working day is…

“There are two types of work period – it depends on whether we are in the set-up or delivery period.

During set-up, it’s all about making the NCS programme the best it can be. Putting the structures in place, considering everything from how best to support the programme team, and developing national projects, such as working with the inclusion and sales teams.

Delivery mode is very different. I often need to work reactively, depending on what’s happening on a programme, and provide the tools to help the programme teams succeed in their jobs.”

My favourite thing about my job is…

“When I first started it was all about seeing the impact of the programme on young people. As my role has changed I now get to see the impact and benefits of the programme through the members of my team as they experience the positive impact the programme has on the lives of young people.”

The thing I find most challenging about my job is…

“Time – I wish there was more of it in the day! But being busy means we have to focus our time and energy. We consider how we can deliver improvements to our programmes whilst keeping our quality high, using all the time we have available.”

When I’m not working…

“I really enjoy experiencing new cultures and countries. I’m just back from a trip to India where I rode a motorbike from Mumbai around the Maharashtra State. I also love live music and cooking, particularly Vietnamese and other South-east Asian cuisines.”

What is your favourite quote?

“There’s a quote I have referenced quite a lot and used in graduation ceremonies. It’s a Margaret Mead quote:

‘Never believe that a few caring people can’t change the world. For, indeed, that’s all we ever have.’”
