Projects and Operations Manager (Tented Village)

About the role

The Projects and Operations Manager will work within Procurement department at The Challenge, aiding with the set-up and maintenance of a number of Tented Villages that will run throughout the summer months. These Tented Villages will accommodate groups of 60-70 young people at a time as they take part in the National Citizen Service, which The Challenge delivers. The role reports to the Procurement Manager.

These Tented Villages are intended to be comfortable, high-quality sites that go beyond basic camping. The sites will incorporate marquee kitchens, additional shower and toilet facilities and space for participants to relax during free-time, all of which present practical challenges which the Projects and Operations Manager will have to foresee and overcome.

The Projects and Operations Manager’s primary responsibilities will be:

  • To support our Programmes team with any practical issues that arise while the sites are in operation and ensure the sites function safely and to a high standard at all times.
  • Producing detailed set-up plans for each Tented Village site to ensure specific challenges are overcome, and that we provide a high quality residential experience throughout the summer.
  • Reviewing existing equipment at our warehouse prior to the summer and replacing or repairing kit where necessary.
  • Overseeing the logistics and practicalities of the set-up of Tented Village sites. To include managing a team of temporary workers who will erect tents and marquees, ensuring temporary showers are sited and connected correctly and confirming amenities such as lighting and fridges are connected and functioning.
  • Similarly, to oversee the take-down of these sites and that all equipment is stored in an orderly manner in our warehouse.
  • To produce a strategic review of Tented Village sites following the summer to inform best practice in future.
  • Act as a point of contact between The Challenge and the sites we will be using throughout the summer, maintaining a good working relationship.

Skills/Experience

  • Resourceful and practically minded, the candidate must be comfortable dealing with the challenges that arise when organising temporary accommodation on this scale.
  • Knowledge and experience of the logistical and safety considerations associated with camping.
  • Ability to motivate and manage a small team of staff during the set-up and take-down of each site.
  • The candidate must be able to think innovatively and adapt processes to continue to improve upon the existing model.
  • Interest in building stronger communities and furthering The Challenge’s stated mission.

The role will require flexibility with working hours and there will be early mornings, late evenings and weekend working required at various points throughout the 6 months.
