Two Doors Too Far?

Recently, we had some friends over for dinner.  We chatted about our work, our children, our gadgets! Then the conversation slowly turned to our  neighbours.

Our friends mentioned that they had lived in their house for 5 years, and didn’t know their neighbours’ names on either side. They had shared the polite ‘nod’ when eyes met outside, but had never actually spoken.

This got me to thinking ‘How many of us live like that?’

I set them a challenge.  The next time they saw their neighbours from the two nearest houses on either side, they would introduce themselves.  ‘Hi! I realised the other day that we have lived here for 5 years and I don’t even know your name…’

As of yesterday he has spoken to two out of four of them, he knows their names and they know his.

Saying hello to your neighbours may not give you a new best friend, but if we want to build stronger communities – knowing each other’s names is a good place to start.
