We need more than soaps and sunshine

I have a friend from Australia living in London who always talks about either the weather or the soaps when she meets new people. She says that this is Britain’s ‘common ground’.  A safe place to start a conversation with anyone.

It is our natural desire to find and share common ground.  One writer put it like this, “When we feel like we belong we feel connected and we feel safe. As humans we crave the feeling and we seek it out.”*

But as our country becomes more diverse by age, ethnicity and income are the soaps and the weather really a deep enough source for the ‘common ground’ that we all share?  And if not, how do you go about creating more?
