Giving young people a HeadStart

Last September, The Challenge launched a new pilot programme called HeadStart.  Supported by the Mayor of London and attracting 90 young people so far, the HeadStart programme guarantees NCS graduates an interview for part time work once they have completed 16 hours of volunteering in their communities.

HeadStart encourages NCS graduates to stay engaged in community action whilst improving their employability skills and confidence at the same time.

The programme is also supported by our business partners, Starbucks and New Look, both of whom have run employer-led workshops, as well as offered interviews to NCS graduates. Matt Simmons, Talent and Business Partner at Starbucks, praised the ‘enthusiasm, passion, and readiness to join the workplace’ of the NCS graduates, who ‘exceeded our expectations’ and made it ‘a pleasure to be able to contribute to the HeadStart programme’.

Nikki, who has recently been employed by Starbucks, said she has a ‘new found independence’ after attending HeadStart workshops on CV writing and interview preparation.

Following the success of this pilot, we look forward to expanding the programme to non-NCS graduates later this year.
