On Friday 20th April, 56 young people aged 14-18 took part in a community youth festival held at Queens Road Baptist Church in Coventry. The event connected young people with community partners through skills exchange workshops, aimed at developing entrepreneurial skills and building relationships between people who would not normally work together.

Attendees had the opportunity to design and produce t-shirts in order to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and contributed ideas towards an intergenerational café being set up by local organisation, Coming of Age Partnership. Local partners delivered workshops and assessed delegates throughout the day, awarding prizes to teams who displayed strong teamwork, leadership and communication skills. Partners included volunteers from Barclays Bank PLC, Macmillan Cancer Support, Coventry Fire Service and Made by Young People (MBYP).

Mandy Spraggett, Fundraising Manager at Coventry and Warwickshire Macmillan Cancer Support, stated: “Macmillan Cancer Support wants to connect with young people. We always find young people to be positive, inspiring and enthusiastic. Working with The Challenge Network to produce good quality items that we can sell or raffle is an ideal way to engage them.”

Cameron Cormell, 2011 Solihull Challenge graduate stated, “If I hadn’t done The Challenge I wouldn’t do charity work and help out the community. The Challenge gives you confidence to do it and The Challenge Society gives you experience of different activities that allow you to help out even more.”

Junior Robinson did not complete The Challenge programme but has been an active member of The Challenge Society. He said, “At first I came along because it was something to do and it’s quite fun as well. I never really thought about doing voluntary work before The Challenge Society but now I enjoy it.”
