Last week, our newly appointed Chairman Colin Smith took to the spotlight in appearances on BBC programmes Daily Politics on Wednesday and PM programme on Thursday. Both appearances were opportunities for Colin to elaborate points made in an article he wrote in The Times newspaper on June 26.

Colin joined Constitutional Reform Minister Mark Harper MP and Shadow Olympics Minister Tessa Jowell MP on the Daily Politics show to discuss the importance of businesses supporting young people in the development of soft skills which are often lacking in today’s young workforce.

Colin urged businesses to open their doors to young people, even if for a few hours, to give them an insight into what work really is. He also encouraged businesses to get involved with schemes in their community such as The Challenge that help prepare the next generation of UK business leaders.

These points were then reiterated on Radio 4’s PM programme (starts at 23:50) in a piece on youth employment by journalist Sima Kotecha. Current Challenge participants also had the opportunity to explain how the programme was helping them to develop key skills and capabilities relevant to work, such as confidence, communication and teamwork.

We are delighted that Colin’s appearance has highlighted the important role businesses play in our programmes and we look forward to deepening our relationships with current business supporters as well as developing new partnerships.
