The Challenge network appoints new chairman

The inaugural chair of The Challenge Network, Patrick Shine, stepped down on March 31st and has been replaced by Colin Smith OBE.

Patrick held this role since the charity was founded and has been pivotal to its rapid growth and development over the last three years.

Craig Morley commented, “It has been a privilege to work with Patrick, who has brought extensive knowledge and experience to The Challenge Network from both the business and third sectors. Patrick has played a vital role in TCN’s achievement’s to date – his dedication and personal support has been invaluable and his contributions in our formative years will set us in good stead as we move forward. We are looking forward to working with Colin as our new Chairman, where he will bring a wealth of experience in fast moving consumer businesses and the not for profit sector and will play a crucial role in steering the strategic direction and governance of TCN in the years ahead”

Patrick Shine stated, “The Challenge Network makes a real difference to civic society by building trust and confidence in young people and hence making a difference in their local community, and I will continue to support the charity in an informal role supporting new development initiatives.”

Patrick continues as Lead Partner and co-founder of The Shaftesbury Partnership, Executive Director of the social enterprise FranchisingWorks, and Chairman of the Southwark Free School Trust.

Colin Smith OBE is currently Chairman of Poundland Group Holdings, Europe’s largest single price discount retailer and a past Chief Executive and Finance Director of Safeway Plc. Colin has also had previous experience in the not for profit sector as a Trustee of Save The Children and as Chairman of the food industry sponsored Red Tractor assurance scheme. Looking ahead to his new role, Colin Smith said, ‘‘I fully support TCN’s mission to connect and inspire people to strengthen their communities. I am looking forward to working with the Board of Trustees and the talented staff team to ensure TCN continues to increase the scope and quality of its programmes’’.
