What are you afraid of?

Surveys show that compared with twenty years ago, we are much more worried about being a victim of crime.

The odd thing is that during that time crime has fallen.

To address this fear, politicians have encouraged police to spend more time walking the streets. But is this really the answer?

An alternative starting point would be to rebuild the trust we have in strangers. We know that over the same period, our trust in others in our neighbourhood has fallen.

We know that in diverse neighbourhoods the best way to rebuild this trust is to get people to meet and mingle.

Its not the police we need on the streets talking to people – its us.
