The Challenge values its employees and the teams dedicated to helping us achieve our vision of creating a more integrated society. We regularly grab five minutes of their time to highlight different roles and give you an insight into what it’s like to work for us.

Fatema Chowdhury joined the staffing team for north west London in January 2015. Having started as a staffing co-ordinator, she’s since worked her way up to her current position of senior staffing associate. In her spare time she loves swimming and reading books, though not at the same time!

A typical working day is…

“The first thing I do in the morning is to check my emails to see if there’s anything that needs doing urgently. I then get myself a cup of tea to get me started while I begin completing my tasks.

The staffing department is very varied depending on the time of year. From the end of September to January we are focussed on promoting seasonal roles. At the moment I’m looking at organisations we can work with to further promote those roles, such as universities, schools and colleges where we can target graduates, teachers, mentors – anyone with experience of working with young people.

I look for ways in which we can best work together with the organisations and their networks. With universities, for example, I highlight how a seasonal role could really benefit their students’ personal and professional development. It’s not just about how their recruitment will benefit us, but what it can do for them.”

My favourite thing about my job is…

“Definitely my team. The people I work with are what really make working at The Challenge such a positive experience. My immediate team are so funny, supportive and energetic. If I’m ever feeling down I know I can rely on them for personal support. They make me laugh and give me a different perspective.”

The most challenging thing about my job is…

“Trying to marry the different priorities. It gets busier between January and summer, as we continue to promote seasonal roles but also begin to offer jobs and secure positions. We’re often working on multiple priorities, with competing deadlines, so I have to find the right balance.”

When I’m not working…

“I go to the gym, about two to three times a week. I really enjoy swimming so I do a lot of that. I also like just hanging out in a café with a nice atmosphere, a hot cup of tea, and a good book.”

My favourite quote is…

“‘Creativity is intelligence having fun’ by Albert Einstein. I only learnt it recently, but it’s really stuck with me. It’s made me think more about how I make the most of my time outside of work.”
