How did you feel when you were put forward for HeadStart Action?
At first, I thought it would be tedious. It was 2 hours every Thursday, but I could see the benefits of doing it. I am also doing Duke of Edinburgh and studying Drama for my GCSEs so I thought it would help with both of those.
Can you describe your time with London Bubble?
It was a nice opportunity to see how other people work and to meet people outside of my social circle. We get along more than we used to and I think it’s because we all gained confidence and spent more time together. We even got to do a performance for the London Bubble’s showcase in Surrey Quays which was nice.
I think theatre and music are the best mediums to explore any kind of problem that you want to show the world. I think showcasing social issues as we did makes people, and London as a whole, listen to them.
How would you describe your HeadStart Action experience in one word?
Encouraging. It helped build my confidence with my friends and peers and helped everyone overcome their fears. It helped with my diction and to be confident and not care what other people think.
Did you overcome your fears and reach your goals?
Despite studying Drama I still have a fear of performing in front of an audience! My time with the London Bubble and doing our showcase at City Hall in front of all of those people really helped me overcome it.
In school, I feel like it’s helped me listen better and has shown me I can work in a team because I used to do everything on my own. We had to work as a team and listen to one another to make a play and we actually succeeded!
Would you recommend HeadStart Action?
Yes. It helps build confidence. And it’s nice to have people listen to you and work together. It was a really nice experience.
Did you find the HeadStart Action workshops in preparation for the interview helpful? Is there anything we could have improved on to help prepare you for the interview?
Yes. The booklet we were given helped, especially the things we should and shouldn’t do during interviews. The 5 Ps also helped me a lot- I felt really prepared for my interview. I even had friends come over to my house and help me prepare for the interview by asking me questions. One thing I wish we could have had was a 1-to-1 mock interview.
