How did you feel when you were put forward for HeadStart Action?
I was really annoyed. I didn’t want to commit to something I didn’t know anything about. I already had football, family, and school so I didn’t know how I was going to be able to spend time doing [HeadStart Action]. But I started to love it and committed myself to it. I even had to miss a football match, but it was ok because I could see how beneficial it was for me.
Can you describe your time with Football Beyond Borders?
It was amazing. It was really good and it taught me a lot. I saw how football can positively impact and change lives and I want to continue making that impact around me. I learned what citizenship meant- I didn’t know that word before. I taught me to have a greater awareness of the world around me.
How would you describe your HeadStart Action experience in one word?
Fulfilling. It has really given me an awareness about the world that will help me, and use it for coaching. I learned about issues that I want to use to educate the world around me.
Did you overcome your fears and reach your goals?
My goal to get as much as I could out of the opportunity. I learned to be respectful and not mess about in class. I wanted the chance to go into the workplace and learn to enjoy the moment and experience but to be humble about the opportunity. I learned how to give and receive on the spot feedback, which was really helpful.
I was initially nervous about the commitment and annoyed- I didn’t know how I was going to stay awake after a whole day of class but I learned to really enjoy it and overcome those fears and I’m grateful for it now.
Would you recommend HeadStart Action?
I’ve already done it! I was mocked by my friends when I told them it was a good opportunity that would help them a lot. They started to see the benefit though! Not having it will be weird.
Did you find the HeadStart Action workshops in preparation for the interview helpful? Is there anything we could have improved on to help prepare you for the interview?
Yes. I learned a lot about eye contact, enthusiasm, and how speaking with my hands can help me look more enthusiastic! I used to look too serious. I really wanted the placement, and I think the interview went well. I wish we got to experience Lendlease more. At first, I didn’t care about the interview so I wasn’t nervous, but then when I started to care more, I suddenly got really nervous and felt the pressure, but could have used more practice to prepare!
