Since joining HeadStart my confidence in speaking with other people, especially people of different ages to myself has grown.Sana Mughal, HeadStart
What were you like before volunteering with HeadStart?
I didn’t know much about the world of work, I’ve taken part in the NCS programme and trusted that HeadStart would also be very helpful. I knew that HeadStart would help me gain really valuable work experience.
My community is quite diverse so I didn’t find it hard to mingle with people, I had also gained an insight into this when I was on NCS. I didn’t have much experience with time management or organisational skills so it was great that I got to learn this whilst volunteering.
When you joined HS what changed about you?
Since joining HeadStart my confidence in speaking with other people, especially people of different ages to myself has grown. I also now have a lot more skills to add to my cv, I was able to speak about my volunteering experience in my interview which was received very well.
Have you found interviews easier?
Yes absolutely, before volunteering I struggled to find examples to answer interview questions that were like ‘give me an example of a time when…’ however, having done HeadStart, if I was asked about specific experience regarding experience, I am able to evidence the experience I have had thanks to volunteering.
Where did you volunteer?
The Abbey Centre, a charity for disadvantaged people. It was a charity for both younger people and older people. This really helped with diversifying my ability to speak with different of all ages.
What were your first impressions of HS?
I heard about it through NCS grads emails, what stood out was the guaranteed job interview. I had to do work experience for school and then HeadStart popped up and it was great because I had already found a placement with HeadStart.
What would you say to people your age?
It’s a good way to gain work experience, it looks great on your cv. It’s a great way to help in interviews as you have loads to talk about. It helped build my confidence and I was able to learn how to speak to people of different ages
