Earlier this year, we received funding from Heathrow Community Fund (part of BAA Communities Trust) to enable young people from Hillingdon, Ealing and Hounslow to take part in our programmes. In addition to funding, staff have also played a number of active roles in our summer programme.

Case study: Our Place Community Hub

On Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th September, young people joined forces with volunteers and service users of Our Place Community Hub in Sutton Coldfield to transform an outdoor area of tarmac into a spectacular community garden as part of a Real Challenge Action project.

This month young people have been working on a number of social action projects. This part of The Challenge programme is called Real Challenge Action (RCA) as young people implement, within their local community, projects they planned during the summer.

A note from our CEO

I hope you thoroughly enjoyed the Olympic and Paralympic Games. What I found the most encouraging was the ability of the Games to galvanize a sense of community between people from different backgrounds. In our own way, this is exactly what we are trying to do with our programmes The Challenge and The Challenge Society.

The Challenge now in full swing

Our summer programme has got off to a flying start. Over 1,500 young people have already completed the first elements of the four part programme, with 3,000 currently on the programme and another 5,000 signed up and ready to take part.

“I completed The Challenge last summer. Before going on the programme, I was worried that people would have a negative view of me as I had always been in and out of trouble and felt that people would judge me. However, I couldn’t have been more wrong.

This month marked the 3rd anniversary of the founding of The Challenge Network as a charity.

Three years ago, we were preparing to pilot The Challenge programme in two London boroughs for 150 young people. Three years later, we are gearing up to deliver the programme to 10,000 young people across all London boroughs, Surrey, the West Midlands, Greater Manchester and Lancashire. All participants who complete The Challenge will join our recently launched graduate programme, The Challenge Society.

We are delighted to announce that Heathrow Community Fund, part of the grant making charity BAA Communities Trust, is extending the current funding partnership with The Challenge Network.

We have now surveyed a majority of stakeholders from the 2011 Challenge programme, including parents, teachers and community partners.  The responses are very encouraging and include the following results:

97% of parents believe The Challenge programme is a good use of taxpayers money
