I have been following a community art project online for a while now. It’s called ‘PostSecret’ you may have heard of it. The idea is people are invited to make homemade postcards illustrating their secrets and mail them in anonymously. Every week the website is updated with a series of secrets.

Fifteen young people have recently completed a 12 week programme called, ‘The Social Apprentice’ aimed at tackling major issues faced by young people in the capital.  Two teams received support from Ernst & Young to design successful campaigns that go from the boardroom into their local communities.

The UK is facing  real challenges. With debt growing and unemployment rising, surely this is a time for seriousness. For countries with serious problems need serious solutions.

A story from Afghanistan would suggest otherwise. It is a story about skateboarding.

I have a friend from Australia living in London who always talks about either the weather or the soaps when she meets new people. She says that this is Britain’s ‘common ground’.  A safe place to start a conversation with anyone.

I know all of us will have been shocked to see the news from Woolwich. I woke up this morning with feelings I had not felt since the riots. Faced with division in our country, I felt again that numbing sense of disbelief, coupled with mourning and sadness at the reality followed by an overwhelming desire to find a way to make it better.

A few years ago, scientists in Manchester ran an unusual experiment. Setting up near a group of Manchester United fans waiting for a game,  they  arranged for a volunteer wearing a Manchester United shirt to fall over whenever a fan was passing by.  They counted how many times the fan helped up the volunteer.  

For the second year running, Walsall’s council has held a Young People’s award ceremony, celebrating a range of well-deserved accomplishments. We are pleased to announce that Alex Lemord, a graduate of The Challenge programme, came away with the ‘Young Person of the Year’ award for Community and Citizenship.

My friends’ daughter was getting christened on Sunday, so we went to visit their church. The service started with a song. We all stood up and sung. Well – everyone else did. I was taking a photo of the band.
