My name is Shernice Rai and I am a 17 year old NCS graduate. I completed NCS last year in South Birmingham and this year, I chose to complete a work experience placement with The Challenge.

During the course of the week, I was given the chance to see the magic that is created in The Challenge office ahead of the start of NCS.

Challenge HQ is very different from your average office as it constantly has such a vibrant and lively atmosphere.

Aside from all the expected administrative duties, such as making phone calls and sending emails, I was also given the chance to get out and have fun. I attended a ‘Kick Off’, the name given to the event that marks a start of a new NCS programme. At the Kick Off, I ran ice breaker activities for the eager groups and shared my NCS experience with them. Following this I went to a parents information evening, which was awesome. I really enjoyed seeing how excited the young people were about starting their NCS with The Challenge journey.

I was also given the chance to attend meetings with potential partners, including venue providers. One of the meetings I attended was with the local fire station, which was really fun. Although I tried to stay professional, when offered the chance to sit in the fire truck, I could not resist!

Working at The Challenge office allowed me to understand how much work goes into running NCS and all the behind the scenes preparation that goes into ensuring people like me have an amazing experience on the programme.
