HeadStart Action and the Greater London Authority are pleased to announce the three local delivery partners chosen to deliver the HeadStart Action expansion project (Mayor’s Young Londoners Fund).

The Mayor has created the Young Londoners Fund to help London’s children and young adults make the most of our amazing city.

The Mayor’s new £45m Young Londoners Fund helps children and young people to fulfil their potential, particularly those at risk of getting caught up in crime. It supports a range of education, sport, cultural and other activities for children and young people. The fund has seen £30m made available for projects in local communities. The remaining £15m is invested to expand existing projects funded by City Hall that support young Londoners.

Three delivery partners will work to deliver the HeadStart Action programme to over 400 young people across four London boroughs. HeadStart Action builds on the proven HeadStart London model, which enables young people to develop employability skills and build experiences that employers are looking for through volunteering in their community.

HeadStart Action offers more intensive support to young people aged 14-18 who are at risk of becoming NEET (not in education, employment or training), the project would support them to build their confidence, realise their potential, raise their attainment in education and give them employability skills.:

The chosen delivery partners for the expansion project are:

The Diana Award (delivering in Hackney and Westminster): their mission is to foster, develop and inspire positive change in the lives of young people.

Groundwork London (delivering in Newham): they help communities across the capital become greener, stronger and healthier. They work with people living in London’s most vulnerable places to transform open spaces, re-connect people with nature, provide training & create jobs, and reduce energy use & waste. HeadStart Action: Young Green Entrepreneurs is an ‘Apprentice style’ competition in which 6 groups of young people from 3 different schools in Newham will participate in a structured programme of business skills workshops and training sessions.

Inspire! (delivering in Hackney and Haringey): Their mission is to develop the skills, confidence and motivation of young people in Hackney and beyond. Working in partnership with businesses, education providers, and the community, we inspire, support and open doors for young people: improving their access to the world of work, raising achievement levels and enhancing their future career prospects.

The programmes will run similar to The Challenge’s HeadStart Action pilot programme that is currently running its second and third cohorts across two schools in Southwark. There will be a social action project, employability skills and personal development workshops, a showcase event at City Hall, an enrichment day and an interview with the organisation’s corporate partner(s).

The delivery of HeadStart Action across the local delivery partners will kick off in January so watch this space for more updates in 2019!
