The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Social Integration has announced a call for evidence
The group will explore how immigration system reform could improve integration.
The group Chair, Chuka Umunna MP, has been vocal about the immigration debate in the past. In particular, he has argued that the debate focuses on numbers, with little attention paid to how migrants settle once they’re here. He has also argued that Government must provide greater clarity over where responsibility for such a strategy lies.
Commenting on the inquiry launch, Mr Umunna said:
“Politicians and policy makers should be less shy in acknowledging that immigration can, but does not have to, put pressure on local public services and communities. All too often the debate around immigration tries to provide an accountant’s answer to a cultural problem. We need to look at these issues differently and find solutions to bring communities together where they are living parallel and completely separate lives.”
