About the opportunity

The National Programme Manager leads the planning and delivery of all The Challenge programmes across Britain.  In doing this, the manager leads a team currently distributed across three regions.  The manager also develops and own national community organisation relationships.  This is a unique role at the helm of a programme of great scale and complexity, a true test and continuing development opportunity for a real leader.

The National Programme Manager’s primary responsibilities are:

  • Oversee set up and launch of programmes in London, the West Midlands and Northwest England
  • Lead, manage and coach Regional Teams, including 16 staff.
  • Own and manage relationships with national community organisations (e.g., Age Concern, National Youth Agency)
  • Plan default logistical plan for the Programme, to enable local planning
  • Ensure learnings are captured and shared between local regions
  • Ensure organisational decisions are informed by the needs of local communities and young people
  • Oversee recruitment of summer staff for delivery of the programme
  • Manage relationship with potential Franchise partner
  • Oversee delivery of The Challenge Summer Programme with up to 6500 young people
  • Oversee successful delivery of up to 100 summer programmes working with up to 2000 staff
  • Provide guidance and support to staff in issues related to the programme (this is likely to include issues related to young people, challenging behaviour, community groups)

About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:

Essential:

  • Significant experience managing complex programmes and projects under pressure with a track record of delivery on time and in budget.  Able to remain calm in these situations.
  • Experience managing and motivating large teams of staff
  • Thrives in a fast moving and ever changing environment.  Highly flexible.
  • Experience working with groups of young people (in voluntary or paid capacity)
  • Prepared to travel two days a week
  • Interest in building stronger communities and seeing change in society

Further details

  • This is a permanent, full time role based in London and starting in October 2010.
  • Salary for the role is £45k per year, with more potentially available for an exceptional candidate.  We also offer a stakeholder pension, a Cycle to Work scheme and opportunities for flexible working.
