We are looking for an experienced outdoor sector leader to oversee curriculum design, partner selection and safe delivery of the outdoor adventure portion of our programme.  The role requires a rare combination of strengths in sector understanding, outdoor education practice and practical problem solving. About the opportunity

This role designs and puts in place the curriculum and infrastructure for a young persons’ developmental outdoor adventure programme of unprecedented scale.  The manager’s experience and relationships will be critical ensuring that this scale comes with no loss in quality.  This is a big challenge to provide both organisational and sector leadership.

The Outdoor Adventure Manager’s primary responsibilities are:

  • Oversee design of Personal Challenge curriculum to enable varied types of partners to deliver in a high-quality, scalable manner
  • Work with a Partner Organisation to commission, procure and contract with outdoor activity delivery partners – ensuring provision of 6500 places in 2011
  • Recruit and manage up to 13 Personal Challenge Logistics Officers during the summer
  • Quality assure and oversee summer delivery at multiple sites
  • Lead strategic planning for 2012 and 2013 delivery, to enable doubling of programme size every year

About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:


  • Significant experience managing complex programmes and projects in pressured environments with a track record of delivery on time and in budget.  Able to remain calm in these situations.
  • Experience designing logistical plans for events or programmes
  • Significant experience managing teams of staff in stressful environments
  • Significant experience working in the outdoor sector.  Strong understanding of key players and challenges in the sector.
  • Experience designing and delivering outdoor activity programmes for young people.
  • Track record of resolving challenging problems faced by organisations (this could include overseeing significant organisational growth, working with new audiences, redesigning systems or programmes)
  • Interest in building stronger communities and seeing change in society
  • Prepared to travel


  • Clear understanding of alternative approaches to teaching young people through outdoor activities.
  • Experience working with community groups or volunteering

Further details

  • This is a permanent, full-time role that can be based in London, Birmingham or Bolton, starting in October 2010.
  • Salary for the role is in the range of £30k-35k per year, with more potentially available for an exceptional candidate.  We also offer a stakeholder pension, a Cycle to Work scheme and opportunities for flexible working.
