About the opportunity

The Programme Associate is the face of The Challenge in the community.  Associates build and maintain partnerships, co-develop events and activities and manage detailed logistics for the community phase of The Challenge Programme.  This role gives great responsibility and external exposure, allowing rapid progression to more management responsibility for excellent performers.

The Programme Associate’s primary responsibilities are:

  • Prepare a community-centred experience for 540 young people in Summer 2010 focused on a particular area of the UK
  • Build strong relationships with a variety of partners from the local community, local authority and business
  • Work with local communities to prepare ways in which participants to work with them
  • Plan logistics for how Programme will run
  • Support staff recruitment for delivery of the programme
  • Help oversee delivery of the programme for 540 young people
  • Help oversee delivery of The Challenge’s programme including community projects, personal development and staff management
  • Support volunteer mentors, working directly with participant teams

About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:


  • Success in managing events (the more complex the better)
  • Experience managing and motivating people in challenging environments (e.g.,  residential youth programmes, fast-paced workplace)
  • Experience working with groups of young people (in voluntary or paid capacity)
  • Good judgement on how to manage difficult behavioural situations.
  • Interest in building stronger communities and seeing change in society
  • Able to give very good first impression and form good relationships with partners


  • Experience organising programmes or projects with young people
  • Experience in a residential youth environment (e.g, youth camp, scout camp, boarding school etc.)
  • Experience working with diverse community groups
  • Experience working in partnership with other organisations

Further details

  • We have permanent, full time roles based in London, Birmingham and Bolton, starting in November 2010.
  • Salary for the role is £19k per year, with a £2k supplement in London.  We also offer a stakeholder pension, a Cycle to Work scheme and opportunities for flexible working.
