About the opportunity

This Regional Manager is responsible for designing, preparing and delivering The Challenge programme to 1600 young people in the West Midlands in summer 2011.  In doing this, they lead a small full-time team, build their summer team and foster a network of partners in the region.  It is an ideal opportunity to expand on leadership, planning and delivery skills while having a major impact in the region.

The West Midland Regional Manager’s primary responsibilities are:

  • Lead a team of Programme Associates as they design and prepare The Challenge programmes across different locations
  • Build strong relationships with a variety of partners from the local community, local authority and business
  • Plan detailed logistics for delivery of the Programme
  • Oversee recruitment of summer staff for delivery of the programme
  • Oversee delivery of The Challenge Summer Programme with up to 2000 young people (after 2011)
  • Oversee successful delivery of up to 32 summer programmes
  • Manage a team of six direct reports, and up to seventy indirect reports
  • Provide guidance and support to staff in issues related to the programme (this is likely to include issues related to young people, challenging behaviour, community groups)

About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:


  • Success in delivering complex projects on time including managing budgets
  • Experience of organising or managing events
  • Experience managing and motivating staff in challenging environments (e.g.,  residential youth programmes, fast-paced workplace)
  • Experience organising programmes or projects with young people
  • Experience working with groups of young people (in voluntary or paid capacity)
  • Experience in a residential youth environment (e.g., youth camp, scout camp, boarding school etc.)
  • Good judgement on how to manage difficult behavioural situations.
  • Interest in building stronger communities and seeing change in society
  • Able to give very good first impression and form good relationships with partners


  • Experience working with diverse community groups
  • Experience working in partnership with other organisations

Further details

  • This is a permanent full time role based in Birmingham, starting in October 2010.
  • Salary for the role is £30k per year.  We also offer a stakeholder pension, a Cycle to Work scheme and opportunities for flexible working.
