We are looking for new members of our Central Operations team who will play a key role in communicating with young people and their parents. The role requires strengths in verbal and written communication, information management and an eye for how to improve complex processes. About The Challenge Network

The Challenge Network aims to connect and inspire young people from across Britain to strengthen their communities. We are a charity founded in 2009 and headquartered in Central London, with operations across London, the West Midlands and Northwest England. We pride ourselves on having a vibrant and fun culture as well as an environment that combines challenge and support for professional growth.

About The Challenge programme

The Challenge is a youth and community programme that brings together 15-16 year olds from different backgrounds, builds their sense of responsibility and helps them make a difference in a local neighbourhood. The programme is growing rapidly: we expect to work with 3,200 young people next summer and aspire to work with 50,000 per year by 2015 as leading providers for a national government programme.

The Challenge programme is made up of three sequential phases:
• The Personal Challenge: Participants take on a series of outdoor adventure activities at a residential activity centre to bond them together, build their courage and enhance their sense of personal responsibility.
• The Team Challenge: Participants work with community groups using skills they are passionate about (including performance, media, sport, enterprise and design & technology).
• The Real Challenge: Participants explore challenges facing a local neighbourhood and design a project that will strengthen the community. They are then challenged to deliver these projects over a number of weekends in the autumn.

Through our alumni programme we then introduce Challenge grads to local programmes and organisations with whom they can continue their contribution and personal development.

About the opportunity

The Central Operations department works across all The Challenge Network’s functions, managing communications, systems and processes. This is a great opportunity to see how a whole business works and drive the organisation’s ability to operate at national scale.

The Central Operation Intern’s primary responsibilities are:
• Communicating with applicants, participants and parents
• Coordinating mass and individualised communications with applicants, participants, parents, summer staff, alumni staff and alumni young people
• Managing applications and associated information for prospective participants from first contact through to start date
• Managing content in central information systems, on The Challenge intranet and on our external web site

About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to multi-task
• Great attention to detail, even when handling large volumes of information
• Comfort with standard computer tools like Microsoft Word and Excel
• Willingness to jump into new things, as well as patience to give full effort to ‘routine’ things
• Ability to think logically and analytically
• Ability to identify and implement real-time improvements to processes

• Familiarity working with databases and reports
• Experience in an office environment
• Customer service experience
• Power user skills in Microsoft Office, Google Apps tools and Salesforce

Further details

• We have a number of full-time, fixed term roles based in London, starting in late autumn of 2011
• Salary for the role is £14,000 per year. Successful interns are eligible to become Associates, and in 2011, the Associate role is paid £21,000 per year.
