Commercial Finance Manager

We are looking for a talented individual to establish and develop a commercial finance function. The role requires excellent relationship building skills combined with analytical rigour, careful attention to detail and commercial acumen. The successful applicant will join a growing finance team and will have significant influence on the charity’s financial management whilst gaining experience in a dynamic and supportive environment.


About The Challenge Network

The Challenge Network (TCN) was founded in 2009 and is one of the UK’s fastest growing youth and community charities. TCN brings together local people across social divides to strengthen themselves and their communities.

TCN is headquartered in Central London, with operations across Greater London, Surrey, the West Midlands and Northwest England.  We deliver two programmes: The Challenge (a summer programme and part of the government’s National Citizen Service scheme) and The Challenge Society (a year-round programme for graduates of The Challenge). Our programmes bridge social divides, foster positive local action and support young people in their transition to adulthood.


About the Opportunity


The Commercial Finance Manager’s key responsibilities are:

  • Lead the annual budget setting process
  • Ensure regular and accurate reforecasts of annual budget projections
  • Create and update regular rolling cash flow forecasts
  • Provide financial leadership to operational teams to identify new revenue streams and cost saving opportunities
  • Liaise with Government and other funders re analysis of contract costs
  • Liaise with suppliers, sub-contractors and franchisees re analysis of costs and payments



Person Specification

We are looking for an exceptional individual with the following qualities:



·         Fully qualified accountant (CIMA, ACA, CIPFA, ACCA)

·         Commercial finance experience in a fast moving entrepreneurial business environment

·         Ability to demonstrate high degree of  analytical rigour and attention to detail

·         An innovative forward thinking person who is happy to use their initiative to develop new ideas

·         Comfortable with the inter relationship between P&L, Balance Sheet and Cashflow

·         A proactive self-starter




·         Ability to propose creative solutions to financial problems

·         Degree qualified (at least 2:1)

·         Track record of interest and experience within the youth and community sector

·         Experience in introducing new accounting systems

·         This is a full-time, permanent role starting from January 2 2013 (or earlier).

·         Salary for this role will be up to £40,000 (depending on experience), potentially slightly more for exceptional candidates.
