The Challenge Network aims to connect and inspire young people from across Britain to strengthen their communities.  We are a charity founded in 2009 and headquartered in Central London, with operations across London, the West Midlands and Northwest England.  We pride ourselves on having a vibrant culture as well as an environment that combines challenge and support for professional growth.

About The Challenge programme

The Challenge is a youth and community programme that brings together 15-16 year olds from different backgrounds, builds their sense of responsibility and helps them make a difference in a local neighbourhood.  The programme is growing rapidly: we will work with over 3200 young people next summer and are aiming to work with in excess of ten thousand per year by 2015 as a leading provider for a national government programme, National Citizen Service.

The Challenge programme is made up of three sequential phases:

  • The Personal Challenge: Participants take on a series of outdoor adventure activities at a residential activity centre to bond them together, build their courage and enhance their sense of personal responsibility.
  • The Team Challenge: Participants work with community groups using skills they are passionate about (including performance, media, sport, enterprise and design & technology).
  • The Real Challenge: Participants explore challenges facing a local neighbourhood and design a project that will strengthen the community.  They are then challenged to deliver these projects over a number of weekends.

Through our alumni programme we then introduce Challenge graduates to local programmes and organisations with which they can continue their contribution and personal development.

About the opportunity

As we build a national youth and community programme, this role is at the heart of our income generation efforts and is part of the Senior Leadership Team. The Head of Development’s primary responsibilities are: 

  • Working closely with the Chief Executive, lead the development and delivery of the philanthropic and commercial income generation strategy for The Challenge Network
  • Coach managers to identify income generation opportunities and build their business development skills
  • Oversee the preparation of monitoring and evaluation reports for funders and investors
  • Manage the application process for new and existing grant applications, proactively finding new opportunities, making use of knowledge across the organisation
  • Develop and deliver media relations strategy

About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:

  • Significant track record of successful fundraising from corporate sector, charitable foundations, philanthropists, public sector grants
  • Interest in building stronger communities and seeing change in society
  • Keen for rapid career progression as the charity grows, with scope for  significant impact across the sector
  • Flexibility, persistence and resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, result-oriented environment
  • An energetic, enthusiastic and persuasive personality
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in group and individual settings and gravitas with senior audiences.
  • Excellent written communication skills, and understanding of various stakeholders’ priority interests
  • Ability to build rapport with a wide variety of people
  • Experience working with the media

 

Further details

  • This is a permanent, full-time role based in London, starting in June 2011.
  • Salary for the role is £50k per year; more may be available for an exceptional candidate.  We also offer a non-contributory stakeholder pension, a Cycle to Work scheme and opportunities for flexible working.
