The Challenge Network aims to connect and inspire young people from across Britain to strengthen their communities.  We are a charity founded in 2009 and headquartered in Central London, with operations across London, the West Midlands and Northwest England.  We pride ourselves on having a vibrant and fun culture as well as an environment that combines challenge and support for professional growth.  We are looking for passionate, resourceful and responsible individuals to help expand The Challenge in a number of cities across the UK.

About The Challenge Programme

The Challenge is a youth and community programme that brings together 15-16 year olds from different backgrounds, builds their sense of responsibility and helps them make a difference in a local neighbourhood.  The programme is growing rapidly: we expect to work with 8,500 young people next summer and are aiming to work with 50,000 per year by 2015 as leading providers for a national government programme.

The Challenge programme is made up of three sequential phases:

•The Personal Challenge: Participants take on a series of outdoor adventure activities at a residential activity centre to bond them together, build their courage and enhance their sense of personal responsibility.

•The Team Challenge: Participants work with community groups using skills they are passionate about (including drama, media, sport, enterprise and photography).

•The Real Challenge: Participants explore challenges facing a local neighbourhood and design a project that will strengthen the community.  They are then challenged to deliver these projects over a number of weekends.

 

Through our alumni programme we then introduce Challenge grads to local programmes and organisations with whom they can continue their contribution and personal development.  

 

About the opportunity

The Challenge is looking for passionate, resourceful and responsible individuals to help bring the programme to more young people across the UK.  With the support of a Marketing Manager and an Assistant Manager the Sales and Marketing Intern will find, select and place local 16-year-olds into The Challenge’s local programmes.  The intern will be responsible for exciting young people, informing parents and helping both through a detailed application and assignment process to undertake The Challenge programme.  The role is for a fixed period to 31 August 2012.  Opportunities will exist from 1 August 2012 to apply for a permanent Assistant Marketing Manager role.

The Responsibilities

As part of a small, entrepreneurial team the Sales and Marketing Intern is responsible for:

•Maintaining relationships with designated teachers in partner schools across London and the West Midlands

•Building awareness of and excitement about The Challenge among Year 11 students at partner schools and youth clubs through assemblies, focus groups and other events

•Assisting applicants and their parents throughout the process from application to the start of the programme, through parents’ evenings, written communications and telephone conversations

•Managing the pre-programme relationship with participants and maintaining their commitment to take part

The Requirements

We are looking for an exceptional candidate as outlined in the below characteristics:

•Strong communication skills, including comfort with presenting persuasively to large groups and with maturely handling individual conversations with teachers, parents and young people.

•Ability to build rapport with young people (16-year-olds)

•Perseverance to prompt and assist many young people and parents through a detailed application and registration process

•A full UK driving license is desirable but not essential

Pay for this role will be £14,000 (London) and £12,000 (Manchester).
