We are looking for a talented individual with significant experience of strategic HR to join The Challenge Network’s board of trustees.

 

The successful applicant will join a highly experienced board and will have significant influence on the future of the charity’s strategy and governance.

 

About The Challenge Network

The Challenge Network (TCN) was founded in 2009 and is one of the UK’s fastest growing youth and community charities. TCN brings together local people across social, ethnic and intergenerational divides to strengthen their communities. We expect our programmes to work with c18000 young people in 2013 with a projected annual income of over £25m and c250 full time employees.

TCN is headquartered in Central London, with operations across Greater London, Surrey, the West Midlands and Northwest England.  We deliver two programmes: The Challenge (a summer programme and part of the government’s National Citizen Service scheme) and The Challenge Society (a year-round graduate programme). We bridge social divides, foster positive local action and support young people in their transition to adulthood.

Role

The Challenge Network’s Board of trustees includes two Challenge Graduates alongside senior representatives from leading organisations in the UK. The Board discusses key topics including how the develops and grows in size and impact, any major risks, finances and how The Challenge Network works with other organisations.

 

Responsibilities

Attend Board Meetings:

  • Trustees are expected to attend six 2 hour meetings per year, which will be held at or near The Challenge Network office in Central London.
  • During these meetings trustees participate in discussions about a wide variety of aspects surrounding the direction, governance and performance of the charity with the rest of the Board. The agenda and pre-read material for each meeting is sent a week beforehand each trustee is expected to read the documents and come prepared for the meetings.
  • In addition to the main Board the successful applicant will be expected to join the remuneration committee (which meets 1-2 times per year) and potentially the nominations committee that (which meets 2-3 times per year).

 

Support in developing the charity:

  • Trustees have contact with key staff within the organisation outside of Board meetings to make suggestions for improving the organisation and its programmes.
  • They are also strongly encouraged to take part in The Challenge and The Challenge Society programmes and to actively seek to understand the views of key stakeholders.

Represent The Challenge Network:

  • Trustees will have the opportunity to represent The Challenge Network at external events with other organisations, funders and the media.

 

About you

  • Has an interest in building stronger communities and seeing change in society.
  • Has significant experience of strategic HR (e.g., succession planning, organisational design, culture development, compensation planning).
  • Has experience as an HR Director on a PLC board, or with an organisation of similar scale, in a commercial environment or large not for profit.
  • Is highly organised, reliable and responsive.
  • Is able to attend meetings in London (expenses will be paid for).
