About ‘The Challenge’ programme

‘The Challenge,’ is a youth and community programme that brings together 15-16 year olds from different backgrounds, builds their sense of responsibility and helps them make a difference in a local neighbourhood.  The programme is growing rapidly: we expect to work with 8,500 young people next summer and are aiming to work with 50,000 per year by 2015 as leading providers for a national government programme.

The Challenge programme is made up of three sequential phases:

  • The Personal Challenge: Participants take on a series of outdoor adventure activities at a residential activity centre to bond them together, build their courage and enhance their sense of personal responsibility.
  • The Team Challenge: Participants work with community groups using skills they are passionate about (including drama, media, sport, enterprise and photography).
  • The Real Challenge: Participants explore challenges facing a local neighbourhood and design a project that will strengthen the community.  They are then challenged to deliver these projects over a number of weekends.


Through our alumni programme we then introduce Challenge grads to local programmes and organisations with whom they can continue their contribution and personal development.

About the opportunity

This manager will lead a team of 8-12 which will include a mix of experienced Assistant Marketing Managers (AMMs) and new Schools Coordinators.  These teams are responsible for exciting young people, informing parents and helping both through a detailed application and assignment process to undertake The Challenge programme.  It represents a great opportunity to expand people leadership skills and to bring creativity to a marketing and sales approach that is still in development.


The London Marketing Managers’ primary responsibilities are: 

  • Manage and motivate 8-12 field marketing and sales staff through a sustained annual campaign
  • Tightly manage the marketing and sales process for your geography, tracking progress and ensuring quality
  • Work closely with the Head of Marketing to build and implement our strategy to achieve a c25% increase in market penetration across all existing schools.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with local authority education managers and leaders of institutions working across multiple schools and other relevant organisations.
  • Empower AMMs to lead the building of relationships with school Head Teachers across all schools in your defined geography.
  • Oversee the establishment of relationships with link teachers ensuring your team are set up to manage those relationships
  • Working with the Head of Marketing, adapt processes, tools and techniques based on local conditions and progress toward targets
  • Oversee the projects taken on by the Assistant Marketing Managers which have national impact including management of social media channels, the composition of standard communications, and the production of various appealing and impactful marketing materials.
  • Secure the sign-up, assignment and turn-up of the full contingent of participants for all of your geography’s programme-waves in the summer, including efficient waiting list management
  • Analyse data from the marketing and sales process and make adjustments to activities and approach as necessary 
  • Lead your team to successfully inspire high numbers of alumni to be engaged on varying levels in The Challenge Society 


About you

We are looking for exceptional candidates with the following experience and characteristics:


  • Successful experience managing and motivating colleagues
  • An energetic, enthusiastic and persuasive personality with a “can do” attitude
  • Excellent verbal communication skills in group and individual settings, able to hold gravitas with senior audiences.
  • Ability to build rapport with young people (16-year-olds)
  • Experience managing a complex process successfully
  • Excellent written communication skills, and understanding of various stakeholders’ priority interests
  • Flexibility, persistence and resilience to thrive in a fast-paced, result-oriented environment
  • Ability to interpret data and generate practical actions to influence specific metrics



  • Business development experience
  • Experience working with teenagers
  • Sales and marketing experience
  • Analytical skills and Excel expertise to determine and produce useful statistical data


Further details

  • We have two full-time, permanent roles based in London, starting in the early autumn of 2011.
  • Salary for the role is £34,000 per year. We also offer a stakeholder pension and a Cycle to Work scheme.
